Stairs and Hallways
Stairs and hallways act as strong structural elements forcing Chi down and through them. Stairs channel Chi energy like a waterfall, pushing it down and away. If your stairs face the main entrance, vital energy and good fortune is pushed down and out the door. In such cases, it is important to stop the flow of Chi by creating a barrier. This can be done with a sculpture, plant or furniture. Other solutions involve hanging a mirror facing the bottom of the stairs, or a crystal over the bottom step, these will help to catch and re-circulate the Chi.
Hallways are often uncomfortable because of the fast rate in which they channel Chi. People feel the need to always rush to one end or another. To slow this area down, the hallway needs to be broken up into small points of interest or group of little niches. Arrange furniture, plants, mirrors, carpets in a manner which creates a meandering direction of interest for people to stop and admire. Mirrors placed at the end of a hallway reflecting the corridor are bad because the reflection doubles its size.
Ceilings
The height of a ceiling has much to do with the flow of Chi and how comfortable we feel as well. Eight to ten feet ceilings are usually what most people are accustomed to. Low ceilings feel obviously cramped and high ceilings can feel overwhelming and dizzying. You will tend to find that areas with high ceilings are never places people tend to hang around in to relax. The solution for such ceilings are often referred to as drawing the "line between Heaven and Earth." This horizontal line, fitted around the room (usually six to 10 feet above the ground) helps to ground the room and breaks up the stark vertical nature of the room. This border can be created in many ways from the use of wooden trims, wallpaper, or even the use of art hung at the same height around the room. The space above this line represents the Heavens and can be used to hang lightweight and uplifting items. Defining the Heavens with such things can help to inspire us and lift our spirits. Low ceilings require items such as lights, mirrors, plants and bright coloured materials to push the ceiling up. Vertical lines (ie wallpaper) and lights that shine up at the ceiling are great ways to open up a room.
Electrical Equipment
Electrical equipment are great stimulators of Chi and have the ability to attract our attention, they demand our energetic presence. At home, this can create imbalance, especially when some peace and quiet is necessary. The best thing to do is to try and conceal electrical equipment when not in use. For example keeping your television within a closed cabinet when not watching, or even covering it with nice fabric. This is especially important in a bedroom when the primary function is rest.
